Old Albanian RFC Match Programme

Worthing vs Old Albanians

Worthing Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team playing in the fourth tier of the English rugby union league system; National League 2 South.

A group of local sportsmen meeting at York House formed the club on the 10 September 1920. They had no ground or equipment, and initially borrowed a field from a local farmer off Wallace Avenue in West Worthing before moving to the Rotary Ground at Broadwater. In the 1924–25 season the club moved to Rugby Road in West Worthing. The Rugby Road ground was the club's home until 1927, when a 6-acre (24,000 m2) site was purchased in Castle Road, West Tarring. The club moved to its current location at Roundstone Lane in Angmering in 1977 and the ground is now designated a Centre of Excellence for rugby in Sussex. Worthing has a proud history of mini and junior rugby, having been the first club in England to offer mini rugby and having held the first mini rugby festival in England which attracted hundreds of teams in the early 90s.

The first XV, nicknamed The Raiders, were runners-up to Henley Hawks in the National League 2 South 2012–13 season and qualified for a play-off against the runners-up of National League 2 North, Stourbridge winning 28 – 26. In doing so, the club became the first club from Sussex to play in the third tier of English rugby.

The club also has a number of other teams, and while their 2nd XV is non-league, their 3rd XV currently plays in the Sussex Spitfire 1 league. Worthing also have a successful Ladies 1st XV who are currently in 2nd place in the National Challenge South East South 2 league

Over the years OAs have faced Worthing many times with some great matches, most recently during the 2015/16 season when OAs did the double 27-3 and 24-31.

Head Coach's Preview

Back to back defeats has placed an increased importance on Saturday's away fixture at Worthing who sit one place and one point above us in the league but with an identical win and loss ratio. As mentioned to the players after last week's loss to Taunton we do not feel we are a million miles away from things clicking on the pitch and we have much to be positive about. During the first eight games we have demonstrated elements of our performances which we can be extremely happy with and our challenge with this young squad is to piece the good bits together consistently within a 80 minute performance.
We welcome captain Ross Hamilton back into the starting XV and Charlie Watson returns to take his place in the centres alongside Dan Watt. We welcome Phil Ackuaku onto the bench who has come in from Blackheath on loan for a couple of weeks to help bolster our front row options and to allow us to rotate a few personnel who have played a lot of minutes over the course of pre-season and the first 8 games.
We are very much looking forward to the double headed fixture with the Romans travelling with the 1st team squad and hopefully we can return to Woolams with two victories on Saturday evening.

Match Report

Titans demonstrated the reason for their name for much of this encounter, a big pack gaining the lions share of possession and, with it, greater scoring opportunity.

Too often this year the clinical nature of the modern game has had Albanians outweighed and the first half this week was no different.

The second period gave home supporters something to cheer about but not enough to gain League points.

The first half hour produced three tries for the visitors from Jarrard Hayler, Alfie Petch and giant scrum half Lewis Webb. Gary Kingdom converted all three.

Just on half time Dan Watt dived out of a desperate tackle and converted his own try.

Six minutes into the second half Morgan Thompson’s clever dummy put Peter Warne over for Watt’s improvement and A’s seemed to be closing the gap. But a penalty try from a scrum and a further score from Connor Baker put matters beyond doubt.

Lloyd Anderson’s driving run cheered up the home crowd when he handed to Watt whose scoring pass released Toby Munday. The captain’s conversion ended the scoring.

Worthing are the hosts next Saturday. Kickoff 15.00hrs.
